Rebecca Raby is a trained sociologist focusing primarily on critical, feminist relational, and new materialist theories, especially in relation to childhood and youth. Her research investigates the effects of privilege and discrimination on the lives of children and youth, emphasizing how age intersects with gender, sexuality, race, and class. She explores various aspects within sociology of education, school disciplinary surveillance practices, and sex education within these contexts. Raby's work has included projects that amplify the voices of youth through participatory methodologies, such as examining children's perceptions and experiences during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is currently involved in SSHRC-funded research regarding young people's jobs and studies the experiences of homeless children in transitional housing. Her research challenges and problematizes children's agency, activism, participation, and rights, particularly concerning governance and regulatory frameworks in schools. Raby employs qualitative methodologies to explore these themes.
