Victoria L. Rubin is a professor at the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) at the University of Western Ontario. Her academic interests focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval, where she investigates how computers analyze and represent human languages to facilitate effective human-computer interactions. Her research critically examines the properties of written texts, including writers' certainty, emotions, and biases. Rubin's past work has emphasized the understanding of deception and disinformation online, alongside her leadership in significant research from 2015 to 2019 on automatically identifying misleading information in digital news. Recently, her lab has shifted focus towards fostering positivity in online communication and studying information behavior that supports well-being, engaging in evidence-based methods from Positive Psychology. She actively teaches courses in Information Organization and Multilingual Information Access, employing a cooperative learning approach to enrich student engagement. Rubin is also involved in research projects that span human and AI-based methodologies, aiming to cultivate a better understanding of online interactions and information seeking behaviors.
