Biography

Dean Bavington is an accomplished researcher and educator in the field of Geography, currently affiliated with Memorial University of Newfoundland. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science Honours in Biology from Acadia University in 1995, followed by a Master's in Environmental Studies from York University in 1997. He completed his Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2005. Throughout his career, Bavington has held significant positions, including a postdoctoral role at the University of Michigan and serving as a Canada Research Chair in Environmental History at Nipissing University from 2008 to 2011. He specializes in research related to marine fisheries management, freshwater fisheries, and environmental history, focusing on critical geographical understandings and the social implications of environmental policies. His published works explore various aspects of fisheries, aquaculture, and environmental justice, reflecting a deep commitment to addressing challenges in sustainable development. Dean is dedicated to teaching critical geographies and environmental history, fostering a deeper understanding of the intersection between society and the environment.
