Matthew Thompson is an academic with a focus on cinema studies, currently teaching at the University of Regina. He earned his PhD from the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. His research critically examines how science fiction media articulates environmental politics, revealing the underlying assumptions that continue to influence contemporary environmental discourse. He has a forthcoming book titled "Life Support: Eco-Dystopian Cinema Long 1970s," which will be published by the University of Minnesota Press in Spring 2026. This work takes a critical look at the representations of the early environmental movement through the lens of 1970s science fiction ecocinema. Matthew's research interests include Indigenous futurism, critical animal studies, and film philosophy. His scholarly work has been published in respected journals such as Spectator, World Picture, and the New Review of Film and Television Studies.
