Biography

Susan Brophy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Legal Studies at St. Jerome’s University, University of Waterloo. She employs an interdisciplinary approach in her teaching and research within Legal Studies, which incorporates elements of political theory, philosophy, history, and political economy. Her current research focuses on the intricate relationships between law, capitalism, and colonialism, utilizing dialectical materialist methodology to analyze the uneven combined development affecting legal authority and politico-legal subjectivity. Brophy engages with prominent continental philosophers including Kant, Marx, and Agamben, examining their contributions to contemporary legal discourse and the implications for anticolonialist methodologies. She has published extensively, with significant works addressing the ethical dimensions and historical contexts of law and colonial practices in Canada.
