Dr. Kanika Samuels Wortley is an Associate Professor at Ontario Tech University, Canada Research Chair, and an expert in systemic racism and the intersection with technology and criminal justice. Her research employs mixed-methods approaches to critically analyze the effects of race and racism within the criminal justice system. As the head of the Criminological Research Advancing Racial Equity Lab (cRARE Lab), she investigates the biases and discrimination faced by racialized communities, focusing on the implications of predictive AI technologies in justice processes. Dr. Samuels Wortley has published her work in top-tier journals and has received several grants to support her research initiatives. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Waterloo, an MA in Criminology from Ontario Tech University, and a BA in Criminology from the University of Toronto. In addition to her academic work, she has served on various committees aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within Canadian policing contexts.
