Matthew Hayes is an Adjunct Professor at St. Thomas University, specializing in Global Transnational Studies. He holds a PhD from York University and has previously taught at the Université de Moncton and the University of New Brunswick. His research focuses on the lives and lifestyles of migrants from lower-income countries to high-income countries, examining how they navigate global inequalities related to class and racialization. His work has taken him to Ecuador and he is currently extending his comparative study to Morocco. Hayes’s concept of lifestyle migration highlights the motivations behind transnational moves, emphasizing how individuals often relocate for lifestyle rather than labor market reasons. He advocates for social justice and affordable housing, being a founding member of the New Brunswick Coalition of Tenants Rights. His extensive research is informed by a strong belief in the need for cooperative, non-profit housing solutions to address the ongoing housing crisis, linked to governmental policies since the 1980s. His published works include the book "Gringolandia: Lifestyle Migration in Late Capitalism" and several peer-reviewed articles on issues of lifestyle migration and socio-economic crises in urban settings.
