The lab focuses on the brain-behavior relationships during adolescence and young adulthood, specifically relating to the development of affective disorders and alcohol/substance use disorders. Current longitudinal studies are using clinical and behavioral phenotyping, structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging, and genetic techniques to investigate the onset and early disease progression of bipolar disorder and alcohol and cannabis use disorders, including the interactions with various conditions. The lab places a strong emphasis on individual differences, directly investigating sensitivity to alcohol and stress through alcohol stress challenge laboratory sessions, as well as the interactions with early life stress to understand the role(s) of these factors in clinical outcomes and to inform early interventions.
