Shin Imai became a lawyer in 1980 and has practiced at Keewaytinok Native Legal Services in Moosonee, specializing in human rights, refugee law, and indigenous rights. In 1989, he joined the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, where he worked on developing Alternative Dispute Resolution programs and initiated several justice projects for indigenous communities. He joined the faculty at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1996 and is currently the director of the Justice and Corporate Accountability Project. Imai has served as Academic Director of Parkdale Community Legal Services, Director of the Intensive Program on Aboriginal Lands, Resources, and Governments, and Co-director of the Latin American Network on Research and Education in Human Rights (RedLEIDH). His contributions to education were recognized with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Law School in 2004 and 2007, as well as the University-wide Teaching Award in 2010.
