Biography

The General History Department at the University of Geneva seeks to offer a renewed view of Swiss history and Geneva through a cycle of general courses. The unit emphasizes essential historian skills, prioritizing training that prepares students for archival work both in Geneva and beyond. This objective necessitates imparting solid foundations on institutions, the functioning of the state, and the economy. Several research axes provide coherence to the unit's educational and research program, with a particular focus on methodological procedures that intersect space and time. The teaching staff pays sustained attention to social history objects, such as family, governmental, commercial, and even intellectual networks, exploring the multiple dimensions of the political aspect, and analyzing the various facets of the history of care and the body. The Swiss history unit engages with major chronological periods, spans from the late Middle Ages to the present day, and maintains constant dialogue with cultural and/or media institutions in Geneva, enabling students to familiarize themselves with museum work and media interactions. It aims to cover the history of the region of Geneva and the country of Switzerland while questioning their ongoing interactions with foreign countries and European ideological currents, thus favoring a comparative and transnational approach to illuminate the complexity of Swiss history.
