Biography

Uyen (Michael) Bao was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and grew up in the Ottawa area. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Physics, both with summa cum laude honors, from the University of Ottawa, earned in 1988. He spent part of his undergraduate studies at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). In 1993, he obtained a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from McGill University. Upon graduation, Michael Bao commenced his career at Defence Research Development Canada (DRDC). He currently serves as co-chair of the NATO Modelling Simulation Group 186, which investigates multidimensional data farming. His research interests encompass complex systems, combinatorial optimization, stochastic processes, and discrete mathematics. He is also an avid badminton and soccer player. Throughout his career, he has worked in various environments, including NORAD Space Command in Colorado Springs, USA, and the NATO Centre for Maritime Research & Experimentation in La Spezia, Italy. Professor Bao has secured funding of 1.1 million dollars from DRDC to explore collaborative operations involving multiple autonomous agents, and he leads a defense project at uOttawa valued at 5.6 million dollars in conjunction with the University of New Brunswick and the National Research Council.
