The department focuses on the scientific understanding of the sustainable provision and use of materials and energy across various levels of economic development, cultures, and lifestyles. Our research models and assessment tools identify effective supply and demand-side strategies to decouple resource use from human well-being. We support open science and operate a research portal with a blog, a visualization database, information about our models, and extensive educational materials. Our projects, including CIRCOMOD and the Future Forests excellence cluster, investigate the interplay between material requirements for decent living standards, economic inequality, and overall economic performance. We aim to contribute to the development of innovative solutions for sustainable resource utilization and the effective recycling and repurposing of materials.
