Dr. Volker Abetz

Professor

Biography

Volker Abetz is a professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Hamburg and head of the Institute for Polymer Research at the Helmholtz Centre in Geesthacht since January 2013. He has served as a professor at various institutions including the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel and the University of Potsdam. His academic journey began with a PhD from Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg in 1990, after which he held various research and teaching positions across Germany, including at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Abetz's research is primarily focused on structured hybrid materials and nanostructured polymers, particularly stimuli-responsive block copolymers and hierarchically structured polymer composites. He has been a founding member of the Reimund Stadler Minerva Center for Mesoscale Macromolecular Engineering at Ben-Gurion University in Israel. His academic contributions are widely acknowledged in the field of Polymer Chemistry, with numerous publications highlighting his work in complex structured polymers and polymer-based materials.
