Dr. Kay Grünewald

Professor

Biography

Kay Grünewald is the Group Leader at the Leibniz Institute of Virology and a Facility Director at the Center for Structural Systems Biology. His research focuses on the structural biology of viruses, emphasizing the use of electron cryo-tomography (cryoET) to provide insights into the three-dimensional organization of pleomorphic viruses such as HIV-1 and Herpes simplex virus. His work has greatly advanced the understanding of virus life cycles by elucidating transient structures critical for viral infection and cellular interactions. He is engaged in developing innovative methodologies that integrate biochemical, molecular, and structural approaches, aiming to provide a comprehensive picture of viral protein interactions and their effects on cellular processes. Through these efforts, Prof. Grünewald addresses fundamental biological questions and contributes to the advancement of virology and structural biology.
