Biography

Dr. Rebecca Simpson-Litke is an Associate Professor at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, specializing in music theory. She obtained her Ph.D. in music theory from the University of British Columbia in 2010, where she researched under Dr. William Benjamin, Dr. John Roeder, and Dr. Richard Kurth. Her master's degree in music theory was completed at UBC in 2003, focusing on pitch organization in flute music by Philippe Gaubert. She holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from the University of Manitoba, where she received the University Gold Medal in Music. Dr. Simpson-Litke's research applies transformational tonal approaches to explore pitch organization in the works of composer Olivier Messiaen, emphasizing structural and compositional aspects. Recently, she has investigated rhythmic interactions between music and dance, particularly in salsa and Latin social dances, and has been active in presenting her findings at international conferences across Canada, the United States, and Europe. In 2015, she co-founded the Society for Music Theory's Dance Movement Interest Group to further investigate the intersection of dance and music theory.
