Biography

Diane Dakers began her career as a print and broadcast journalist in 1991, specializing in arts reporting while focusing on the news, political, and business aspects of Canadian culture, as well as science journalism. In Victoria, she worked as an arts reporter/reviewer for the Colonist and was an on-air host, reporter, producer, and editor at CHEK-TV New VI (now CTV Vancouver Island). Diane's byline has appeared in Canada’s major daily newspapers and numerous national and regional magazines, and her voice has been heard on local, national, and provincial radio. After 20 years as a journalist, Diane ventured into the world of publishing. Since 2010, she has written 28 nonfiction books for middle grade readers, with her recent projects focusing on media literacy and investigative journalism. She has also published a nonfiction book for adults titled "CHEK Republic: Revolution Local Television" and several short novels for middle grade readers. In 2012, Diane earned her Master of Journalism degree from Carleton University, adding a Bachelor of Science degree in physical sciences from the University of Guelph and a Journalism Diploma from Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. Diane has developed and taught courses at Carleton, Royal Roads, and Thompson Rivers universities. She began her teaching career at the University of Victoria as a sessional instructor in Fall 2018 and became an Assistant Teaching Professor in Spring 2022.
