Biography

Howard Leong-Poi is a Professor and Clinician Scientist at Unity Health Toronto, specifically at St. Michael's Hospital, specializing in Cardiology. He obtained his undergraduate medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1992. Following his medical education, he completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Toronto, where he served as co-chief medical resident at Toronto Hospital. He completed his subspecialty training in Cardiology at Toronto Hospital and subsequently pursued a research fellowship in myocardial contrast echocardiography at the University of Virginia under the supervision of Dr. Sanjiv Kaul. His research was co-funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Since returning to St. Michael's Hospital in 2002, he has worked as a staff cardiologist and clinical echocardiographer in the Division of Cardiology, and currently serves as the Director of the Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound Laboratory. His clinical interests encompass ischemic valvular heart disease and echocardiographic evaluation of cardiovascular disease. His research focuses on novel diagnostic and therapeutic applications of contrast ultrasound in cardiovascular diseases, supported by grants from major health research organizations.
