Biography

Joy Chadya is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba, specializing in social history with a focus on Africa, particularly Southern Africa. Her academic work explores themes such as transnational histories and liberation struggles. She investigates cross-border migration patterns in the Southern African region, examining how these movements impact labor dynamics and women's urbanization. Additionally, her research delves into the Zimbabwean deathscape, illuminated by the historical context of colonial rule. Dr. Chadya's pedagogical practices reflect her research interests, as she engages students in exploring complex historical narratives related to the African diaspora, migration, internal displacement, and labor history. She is currently mentoring graduate students in both Master's and PhD programs, fostering a new generation of scholars in the field. Her extensive academic background includes degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Zimbabwe, further bolstering her expertise in African historical studies.
