Dr. David Mcmillen

Associate Professor

Biography

David McMillen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto Mississauga. His research focuses on Biological Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry, with a particular interest in Synthetic Biology and Cellular Control. The McMillen Laboratory aims to create an engineering discipline for living cells by using molecular biology to design and experimentally implement biological devices that can sense internal cellular states and respond to them in innovative ways. This includes the implementation of feedback control loops to regulate protein expression levels and using interdisciplinary expertise to translate abstract mathematical results from fields like control theory into practical design procedures for biological contexts. Current projects in McMillen's lab include the development of inexpensive cell-based biosensors and protein production systems that can serve developing regions. His group has a strong and growing interest in applying their research outcomes to the field of global health.
