Dr. Octavian Catuneanu

Professor

Biography

Octavian Catuneanu is a Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta, specializing in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His research interests encompass stratigraphy, sedimentology, and basin analysis, focusing particularly on the evolution of sedimentary basins from the Precambrian to the Phanerozoic age. Catuneanu's work investigates the complex interactions between allogenic and authigenic processes that control the nature and architecture of stratigraphic records. He has a keen interest in external controls on sedimentation, including the impacts of climate change, sea-level rise, and tectonic activity. His research methods combine outcrop studies with subsurface data, utilizing core sedimentology, well-log interpretation, and seismic data analysis. Professor Catuneanu also actively supervises students in research themes related to process sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, and basin analysis, among others. He teaches courses such as EAS 209, which provides a comprehensive overview of the geology of Western Canada, highlighting the geological processes involved in landscape evolution across national and provincial parks. Catuneanu has contributed significantly to the field through numerous publications and ongoing research initiatives aimed at enhancing the understanding of sedimentary processes and basin dynamics.
