Dr. Mario Boido

Associate Professor

Biography

Mario Boido is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Waterloo. His research investigates the intersections of memory, time, identity, and cultural production, with a focus on the arts, including literature, film, and visual culture. He explores how these forms contribute to the construction of collective memory and the ethical-political dimensions involved in representing the past. His work has examined the complex dialogue between word and image within modern and contemporary Latin American culture, investigating how visual and verbal forms of representation interact to produce meaning. Mario's inquiry began with his doctoral research and has evolved into a broader exploration of how narrative and visual media mediate experience and shape our understanding of history and subjectivity. Currently, he is developing a model called the Phenomenology of Human Experience in Time (PHET), which seeks to describe how consciousness arises from the dynamic integration of recollection, attention, and expectation. PHET posits that human consciousness is fundamentally temporal, making sense of the world in the context of memory. Through his lines of inquiry, Mario aims to articulate the epistemic and ethical functions of memory, working towards a meaningful engagement with the past while fostering inclusive and dignified futures.
