Biography

Professor Christopher Hearty is a distinguished academic in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Physics from Simon Fraser University, awarded in 1982, and completed his Doctorate at the University of Washington in 1987. With a strong background in experimental physics, he has held significant positions including a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1987 to 1994. His research interests are primarily focused on Particle and Nuclear Physics, with specific emphasis on subatomic physics. He is actively involved in direct searches for new physics phenomena, including studies related to e+ e- collisions and investigations into the dark sector and light Higgs. Professor Hearty has also contributed to the academic community as the chair of the teaching peer review committee and as a chief reviewer for the CERN LHCb committee. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was named an APS Fellow in September 2015 and was a recipient of the prestigious 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, awarded to several experiments including T2K.
