Dr. Erik Vakil is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute. He completed his undergraduate training at Dalhousie University and attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Following his graduation, he undertook post-graduate training in the United States, where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. He further pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases & Critical Care at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, followed by a sub-specialty fellowship in Interventional Pulmonology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His research interests focus on thoracic oncology, particularly in improving the diagnostic staging pathways for patients suspected of having lung cancer. Dr. Vakil is actively collaborating with MD Anderson Cancer Center on projects that employ decision analysis methodologies to assess the risks and costs associated with various bronchoscopic strategies for lung cancer diagnosis and staging. Through his work, he aims to enhance the quality of multi-disciplinary lung cancer care provided to patients.
