Cheng Xin Ip is a Hong Kong-born conductor, appointed Director of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and serves as a Sessional Lecturer in Conducting, where he teaches undergraduate conducting. He is a member of the cohort at Orchestre Métropolitain’s Orchestral Conducting Academy, having been mentored by notable conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Ip regularly collaborates with various orchestras and has been selected as a conducting fellow at Domaine Forget de Charlevoix for the 2023-2024 year, where he studies under the guidance of Kensho Watanabe. Additionally, he has been invited to participate in the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, working closely with Marin Alsop and Mei-Ann Chen. His upcoming projects include conducting the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for the 2024/25 RBC Canadian Conductor Showcase, with mentorship from Daniel Raiskin. Cheng completed his graduate studies at UBC in conducting under Dr. Jonathan Girard and has participated in numerous workshops and masterclasses with respected conductors. An accomplished percussionist, he earned a Master of Music in Timpani and Orchestral Percussion Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music, where he won the Southern Percussion Prize, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
