Biography

Johné Liu is a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, leading the LIU Lab, which focuses on fundamental cell cycle mechanisms related to inflammation and chronic disease. His research activities include evaluating the role of the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii in delivering therapeutic biologics to treat gastrointestinal diseases. He has worked on projects investigating mucosa-derived polyamines such as putrescine and spermidine that are essential for intestinal tissue remodeling, particularly in weaning animals to promote mucosal regeneration after gut injuries. Liu's collaborative efforts have led to the development of engineered strains of S. boulardii that secrete spermidine, showing potential in ameliorating colitis and colon cancer in mouse models. His research also explores the potential of these strains to be combined with pro-regenerative biologics targeting inflammatory pathways associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
