Biography

Thomas Schlich is the James McGill Professor at McGill University, where he serves as the Chair of the Department of Social Studies of Medicine. He specializes in the history of medicine and science from the 18th to the 21st centuries. His academic journey includes positions across various locations including Marburg, Germany, and Cambridge, England. He was awarded the Heisenberg Fellowship by the German Research Council (DFG) between 2000-2002 and has held a Canada Research Chair from 2002 to 2012. His research interests focus on the history of modern medicine, particularly in surgery and medical technology, studying the evolution of medical innovations and their societal implications. Schlich’s notable publications include edited volumes on surgery history and critical analyses of antisepsis and medical practices in the 19th century. He teaches courses on the interplay between medicine and society, medical history, and the influence of technology on surgical practices.
