Biography

Banu Örmeci is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, where she holds the Jarislowsky Chair in Water and serves as a Canada Research Professor. Her research interests focus on various aspects of environmental engineering, particularly water treatment processes. She has conducted extensive research on wastewater treatment, including physical, chemical, and biological advanced treatment methods. Additionally, she explores biosolids treatment and management, as well as the impact of microplastics, PFAS, and other nanoparticles in environmental contexts. Professor Örmeci's work includes the surveillance of pathogens in water, wastewater, and air, keying in on viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and RSV, alongside concerns related to antimicrobial resistance. She is also dedicated to the development of real-time monitoring technologies and optimization of treatment processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of water quality management.
