Dr. Martine Smit

Professor

Biography

Martine J. Smit is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research specializes in biochemistry focusing on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), exploring topics such as constitutive activity, endosomal signaling, dimerization, and the biology of extracellular vesicles. She investigates the oncogenic signaling networks activated by human and viral chemokine receptors, leveraging extensive experience in drug discovery. Over the last decade, Smit has identified various nanobodies that target and modulate the function of these receptors. She has secured numerous competitive grants, including a fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been instrumental in various research collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotech companies, leading to multiple patents. Additionally, Smit's involvement extends to EU-funded projects, including being the project coordinator of the ONCORNET initiative for PhD training.
