Biography

Janine Clark is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her work focuses on decentralization, local politics, Islamist movements, civil society, and the role of women in politics within the Middle East and North Africa. Currently, she is involved in a SSHRC-funded project that examines the interplay of sexuality politics and gender activism in Lebanon, Jordan, and Tunisia. Clark has conducted extensive field research across several countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Yemen. She is the author of several books, including 'Local Politics in Jordan and Morocco: Strategies of Centralization and Decentralization' (Columbia University Press, 2018) and 'Islam, Charity, and Activism: Middle-Class Networks and Social Welfare in Egypt, Jordan, and Yemen' (Indiana University Press, 2004). As a co-editor, her contributions include 'Political Science Research in the Middle East and North Africa: Methodological and Ethical Challenges' (Oxford University Press, 2018) and 'Economic Liberalization, Democratization, and Civil Society in the Developing World' (Macmillan Press/St. Martin's Press, 2000). She has published numerous articles in esteemed journals such as Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, PS: Political Science and Politics, International Journal of Middle East Politics, and Mediterranean Politics, contributing significant insights into her areas of expertise.
