Biography

Timothy Snyder holds the inaugural Chair of Modern European History, supported by the Temerty Endowment for Ukrainian Studies, at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and heads the academic advisory council for the Ukrainian History Global Initiative. He specializes in the histories of Central Europe, Ukraine, the Soviet Union, and the Holocaust, and speaks five European languages while reading ten. Snyder is the author and editor of twenty books published in forty languages and regularly contributes to various publications, including the New York Review of Books. His work has inspired demonstrations and projects in multiple media forms including punk rock and opera. Snyder's research focuses on themes such as authoritarianism, digital politics, and social issues, and he has appeared in documentaries and as an expert witness in parliaments.
