People think accounting practice is characterized by a mechanical application of set rules. Marco Trombetta believes that to account properly for a transaction, one must understand the economics that apply to accounting mechanics. His intuition, combined with a rigorous training as a theoretical economist, allows him to view accounting as a means by which companies transform raw data into information that is useful for both internal and external decision makers. Although this abstract idea may seem trivial, it is at the core of recent developments in accounting practice. The way companies are created, organized, and managed is changing rapidly, and this has implications for accounting standards and procedures that emphasize the substance of transactions over form, allowing businesses to adapt to a dynamic environment and ensuring international acceptance. This spirit is embedded in the set of International Financial Reporting Standards that underlines the ongoing process of harmonizing accounting standards globally. Professor Trombetta’s fundamental background in accounting enhances his teaching. In addition to being an educator and researcher, he is also active as a consultant and in-company trainer. Furthermore, Marco serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Accounting Public Policy, one of the most important academic accounting journals in the world.
