Professor

Biography

Keith Chen is a professor of behavioral economics at UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he holds the Bing (’86) Alice Liu Yang Endowed Term Chair in Management Innovation. His research blurs traditional disciplinary boundaries by applying big data tools to investigate problems at the intersection of economics, psychology, and biology. Chen's early work addressed topics traditionally under the domain of economics, including primate decision-making and the connections between language and economic behavior. He has analyzed unique datasets, utilizing precise smartphone location information from millions of anonymous individuals over time. This innovative approach has generated a significant portfolio of work that explores various issues, such as the spread of COVID-19, racial disparities, voting, and police exposure. In addition to his academic work, Chen advises multiple companies on behavioral economics topics, business strategy, and dynamic pricing. He also teaches courses in competitive analytics within the MSBA program and behavioral economics at the Ph.D. level.
