Dr. David Chan

Professor

Biography

David C. Chan is the Harold Violet Alvarez Professor of Biology and the Dean of Graduate Studies at the California Institute of Technology. He holds an A.B. from Harvard College (1988), an M.D. from Harvard Medical School (1996), and a Ph.D. (1996). His academic career includes roles as Assistant Professor (2000-2006), Bren Scholar (2000-2006), and Associate Professor (2006-2010) at Caltech. Chan's research focuses on mitochondrial dynamics, exploring the molecular mechanisms and physiological functions of mitochondria and their relevance to human diseases. He investigates cellular processes including mitochondrial fusion and fission, the implications of these processes for cellular function, and their roles in diseases like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. Chan employs various approaches in genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and structural biology to understand how mitochondrial dynamics affects vertebrate tissues and overall cellular health. His studies are critical in understanding the cellular role of mitochondria and the impact of their dysfunction in human health.
