Biography

Morteza (Mory) Gharib is the Hans W. Liepmann Professor of Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Teheran University in 1976, followed by a Master of Science from Syracuse University in 1978, and completed his Ph.D. at Caltech in 1983. His academic career at Caltech includes roles as Professor of Aeronautics from 1992 to 2001, transitioning to Professor in Aeronautics Bioengineering from 2001 to 2002. He has held the position of Liepmann Professor in Aeronautics Bioengineering from 2002 to 2006, and then served as a Professor in Bioengineering from 2006 to 2009, followed by a role in Bioinspired Engineering from 2009 to 2013. Gharib has also been the Director of the Linde Institute and Vice Provost at Caltech. His administrative roles include directing the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories and the Center for Autonomous Systems Technologies. He has received the Booth-Kresa Leadership Chair for leadership in aerospace innovation.
