Shady Amin is an Associate Professor of Biology at NYU Abu Dhabi, where he heads the Undergraduate Studies of Biology program. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from San Diego State University, and culminated in a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego, in collaboration with San Diego State University. His research focuses on the role of microbiomes in marine hosts such as microalgae, corals, and cetaceans, investigating fundamental questions about adaptation and evolution in marine ecosystems. He employs a range of methodologies, including genomics and fieldwork, to explore complex relationships between species, with particular interest in symbiotic associations and their implications for environmental changes and harmful algal blooms. Since joining NYU Abu Dhabi in 2015, he has contributed significantly to the environmental monitoring of the Abu Dhabi coast. He teaches various biology courses, guiding students through research seminars and capstone projects, encouraging them to explore and propose novel research concepts. His involvement in academia emphasizes the importance of protecting marine biodiversity and understanding the intersections of biological science with environmental conservation.
