Julia Hirschberg is the Percy K. and Vida L. W. Hudson Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, where she has contributed to the fields of natural language processing and human-computer interaction. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Hirschberg worked at AT&T Laboratories from 1985 to 2003, during which she headed the Human-Computer Interface Research Department. She has served in significant editorial roles, including editor-in-chief for 'Computational Linguistics' and co-editor-in-chief for 'Speech Communication,' and has held various leadership positions within the Association for Computational Linguistics and other professional organizations. A fellow of multiple prestigious societies, including AAAI, ISCA, ACL, ACM, and IEEE, she has been recognized for her contributions with numerous awards, including the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award and the ISCA Medal for Scientific Achievement. Hirschberg has been active in promoting diversity in the field. She has received honorary doctorates from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Currently, she is also an Amazon Scholar from 2020 to 2025.
