Biography

Smaranda Muresan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Barnard College, Columbia University, and an affiliate faculty member at the Data Science Institute. Her research focuses on human-centric Natural Language Processing for social good and responsible computing. She develops theory-guided knowledge-aware computational models for understanding and generating language in various contexts, including visual, social, multilingual, and multicultural applications. Her research topics over the years include argument mining and generation, fact-checking, misinformation detection, and understanding figurative language such as sarcasm and metaphor. She is particularly interested in explainable models and frameworks for human-AI collaboration, aimed at creating high-quality datasets, assisting humans with their tasks, and ensuring that AI systems align with human values. Prior to joining Barnard College, she served as a Research Scientist at the Data Science Institute at Columbia University and co-founded the Laboratory for the Study of Applied Language Technologies at Rutgers University, where she received the Distinguished Achievements Research Award.
