Dr. Aleksander Popel

Professor

Biography

Aleksander S. Popel is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, and Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. His research lab focuses on systems biology, computational biology, and computational medicine, with an overarching goal of understanding the mechanisms of cancer to significantly advance treatments for this devastating disease. His work investigates cancer at various levels including genes, proteins, and overall body systems, looking at how factors stimulate tumor growth and how cancer cells communicate with neighboring immune and vascular cells. The lab is dedicated to the development and testing of novel drugs to treat various types of cancer, as well as exploring immuno-oncology approaches that aim to harness the patient's immune system against cancer cells. Additionally, he has conducted important research related to peripheral arterial disease, investigating new methods to induce angiogenesis and improve blood flow to ischemic tissues, utilizing multiscale computational modeling and bioinformatics combined with laboratory experiments.
