Dr. David Nussbaum

Assistant Professor

Biography

David Nussbaum is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His teaching focuses on Power, Influence, and Organizations. Previously, Nussbaum held a Post-Doctoral Fellow position at the University of Waterloo. His research primarily investigates how individuals manage and defend their self-image in the face of psychological threats, including the effects of these threats on beliefs and behavior. Nussbaum explores social contexts that can either attenuate or exacerbate threats to self-image, highlighting that defensive strategies to manage such threats can lead to negative consequences such as academic disidentification, missed learning opportunities, and avoidance of crucial medical tests. His intent is to identify contexts and processes that can mitigate threats, encouraging individuals and organizations to employ strategies that prevent maladaptive outcomes. In his teaching, Nussbaum strives to create an illustrative and interactive classroom experience by using vivid examples of psychological phenomena and emphasizing the relevance of psychology in real-world situations.
