Byron Yu received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley in 2001, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003 and 2007, respectively. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Electrical Engineering and Neuroscience at Stanford University and the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London from 2007 to 2009. Byron Yu joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University in 2010 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, holding the Gerard G. Elia Career Development Professorship. His research is at the intersection of neuroscience and engineering, focusing on how large populations of neurons process information, encode sensory stimuli, and drive motor actions. He addresses fundamental scientific questions about brain function and has developed and applied novel statistical algorithms and methods in dimensionality reduction and dynamical systems, as well as in brain-computer interfaces.
