Dr. Azhar Zam

Biography

Azhar Zam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi. He previously served as an Assistant Professor in the Medical Laser Optics Department at the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he founded the Biomedical Laser Optics Group (BLOG). He has held research positions at institutions such as the University of Waterloo in Canada, National University of Ireland in Galway, Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada, and the University of California at Davis in the USA. Dr. Zam holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Indonesia, a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Luebeck in Germany, and a PhD in Engineering from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. With a strong focus on developing smart devices for medical imaging and diagnostics using novel optical technologies, his work includes areas like smart laser surgery, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustics, and AI-aided optical diagnostics imaging. Dr. Zam has published 85 peer-reviewed articles and has numerous patents to his name. He is also the founder and director of the Laboratory for Advanced Bio-Photonics Imaging (LAB-π) at NYUAD.
