Biography

Honorary Associate Professor Rohana De Silva specializes in dental implants and post-operative pain management at the University of Otago. He has a background in exploring economical rehabilitation methods for partial and complete edentulous patients using dental implants. His research focuses on rehabilitating patients in the shortest possible time following dental extractions while employing a minimal number of implant fixtures. In addition, he investigates the quality of life for individuals treated with dental implants and the feasibility of using metal-free implant fixtures. This area is recognized as a strength of the University of Otago. He conducts research on post-operative pain management related to the surgical removal of wisdom teeth and evaluates the metabolism of commonly used analgesics in the body. His studies include double-blinded crossover trials comparing common analgesics used for pain management post-surgery. He has also designed a new flap technique for wisdom tooth removal that minimizes post-operative complications.
