Dr. W Olmstead

Professor

Biography

W. Edward Olmstead is a Professor Emeritus in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics at Northwestern University. He has a diverse educational background, holding a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University, as well as a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University. His research interests encompass various topics, including reaction-diffusion processes, anomalous diffusion, fluid mechanics, shear localization, bifurcation theory, integral equations, singular perturbations, and mathematical finance. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to these fields and is recognized for his excellence in teaching, having received the McCormick School Teaching Award and the Northwestern Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to his research and teaching roles, Olmstead has served as an editor for 'The Options Professor' and as an associate editor for the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics. His selected publications include influential works on thermal blow-up characteristics in superdiffusive properties and the study of boundary quenching in subdiffusive media.
