Biography

David Littlewood joined Massey University as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication in New Zealand in 2007, having previously come from the UK. With a strong focus on the impact of the world wars on New Zealand society, especially concerning conscription, he has published works including 'Military Service Tribunals and Boards' and 'Equalizing Sacrifice: New Zealand Society and Conscription.' He received a Marsden Grant in 2016 to examine New Zealand's introduction of conscription during World War I. His research spans various aspects of British and New Zealand history during the world wars, political and social history, and the effects of military service on society. Littlewood supervises doctoral candidates, engaging in topics related to New Zealand’s historical narratives, particularly regarding the merchant seafarers’ contributions in World War II. His published works include articles in the 'New Zealand Journal of History,' and he is an active participant in presenting findings at conferences and discussions.
