Dr. Stephen Buratowski

Professor

Biography

Stephen Buratowski is a Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on eukaryotic gene expression, particularly the functions and interactions of RNA polymerase II, transcription factors, and the communication between chromatin and transcription complexes. Buratowski’s lab employs a variety of biochemical and genetic techniques using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to explore the mechanisms of transcription initiation and the associated mRNA processing. Recent projects in the lab include studying the role of the C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II in mRNA processing, determining the factors that modulate RNA polymerase II elongation and termination, and investigating links between transcription and chromatin structure. His work has implications for understanding transcriptional regulation in various biological contexts and its connections to diseases such as cancer.
