Professor Peter holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College and completed his PhD in Physics at Princeton University. He continued his postdoctoral research at the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Peter joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1996 and became the Associate Director of the Whitehead-MIT Bioimaging Center in 2000. His research focuses on engineering novel microscopy instrumentation and the application of new tools to study biomedical problems, particularly in understanding the structure and function of single proteins and the development of non-invasive optical methods for cancer diagnosis. His laboratory creates novel optical imaging, manipulation, and fabrication technologies at the microscopic level to advance biological sciences and improve medical practices.
