The Penn Bioinformatics Neurodegenerative Disease (BiND) Lab utilizes multimodal bioinformatic approaches to enhance the understanding of the biological basis of age-associated neurodegenerative conditions. The Lab focuses on various disease spectra, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Primary Age-Related Tauopathy (PART), which are characterized by common tau pathology differentiated by the presence or absence of amyloid pathology, as well as Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which share common TDP-43 pathology and present a range of clinical syndromes. Through testing biologically grounded hypotheses via innovative analytic multimodal approaches, the Penn BiND Lab integrates neuroimaging modalities with genomics and clinical datasets to address the biological basis of heterogeneity in aging disease spectra. In the course of their work, the Lab also develops robust biomarkers and novel neuroimaging techniques that are used to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, accelerate the discovery of disease-modifying agents, and define essential clinical trial endpoint measures for emerging therapeutic trials.
