Helene Benveniste is the Anthony N. Brady Professor of Anesthesiology at Yale University, specializing in the areas of brain imaging and neurodegenerative diseases. She received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics from Katedralskolen, Denmark, and completed her MD in 1986 and PhD in Neurobiology at the University of Copenhagen in 1991. Her early career included training as a Research Fellow at Duke University Medical Center, where she developed high field magnetic resonance imaging techniques focused on Alzheimer’s Disease. Benveniste joined Duke University’s Department of Anesthesiology in 1996, expanding her work on MRI diagnostic platforms for early detection of Alzheimer's. In 2001, she became faculty at Stony Brook Medical Center, where she established a preclinical MRI facility and integrated PET technology to study pharmacokinetics of anesthetic drugs. Moving to Yale in November 2016, her current research investigates the glymphatic system and cerebrospinal fluid transport in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and aging. Benveniste has received national and international recognition for her contributions to medical research and the understanding of brain waste removal mechanisms.
