Dr. John Mielke

Associate Professor

Biography

John G. Mielke is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo's School of Public Health Sciences, with cross appointments in the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Biology. His research focuses on understanding how neurons adapt to changing responses in their environment, particularly through the impact of adverse conditions such as malnutrition and psychosocial stress on neurobiological development and memory functions. He uses a combination of biochemical, electrophysiological, and behavioral methods in animal models to examine the biological factors influencing outcomes in brain injury and how variables like age, sex, and anatomical region can alter cellular responses to stroke-like injuries. He actively supervises graduate students and encourages interdisciplinary research that aligns with his interests in developmental origins of health and disease, molecular sociology, mechanisms of neuronal cell death, and experimental neuroscience. Academic interests also extend to the biological determinants of health, public health neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and pathobiology. Dr. Mielke welcomes inquiries for graduate supervision on related topics.
