Dr. Raven Garvey

Associate Professor

Biography

Raven Garvey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Her research primarily focuses on the archaeology of hunter-gatherer societies, examining how ecological, demographic, and social factors influence human behaviors and cultural change over time. Garvey's current field projects are concentrated in the southern regions of South America, specifically Patagonia, where she integrates archaeological data with evolutionary modeling to explore the intersections of human behavioral ecology and cultural transmission theory. In addition to her fieldwork, she conducts lab-based projects aimed at testing and developing models related to cultural transmission and technological evolution. Garvey was awarded a fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the years 2022-2023 to further investigate the effects of wind on hunter-gatherers' livelihoods and technologies.
